Berlin Module in German-Arab Studies

The German-Arab Masters Programmes (GAMP) are the result of the German government's development cooperation work in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

The GAMP is aimed at future experts and leaders with some initial work experience who wish to train for a career in international cooperation. There is a choice of five masters programmes, with different specialisations:

Once a year, participants take part in the Berlin-based Module 'German-Arab Cooperation in Development, Business, Culture and Politics'. The Berlin Module has run since 2008 and is rated by participants as a valuable training experience. Since 2015, the SLE has assisted in the preparation, running and evaluation of the Berlin Module.

The focus of the Berlin Module is on understanding the structure and interactions of different institutions and organisations relevant to German-Arab relations, and the corresponding goals and methods in the political, economic and cultural spheres.

During the module, participants learn about processes of adaptation and change in Germany's legal and regulatory systems, through a focus on current issues and examples. This includes meetings with members of the German Bundestag, specialist government departments and the organisations that implement these processes. As well as discussing the latest issues with representatives of these organisations, course participants sit in on a committee meeting at the German Bundestag. In addition, the module involves presentations on key concepts and approaches, academic debates, and cultural issues, and group discussion sessions to examine results and compile reports. By working together in interdisciplinary groups on different topics, participants build an overview of the situation in different sectors, and develop team work and cooperation skills.

The next Berlin Module will take place from 14 to 18 May 2017.
