Understanding the complexity of managing protected areas in Sub-Sahara Africa
SLE invites you to join the seminar “Understanding the complexity of managing protected areas in Sub-Sahara Africa” on June 26, 2018, 16:30 until 19:00h at Robert-Koch-Platz 4.It is common knowledge that the traditional top-down approach of excluding local participation and ignoring local interests in protected areas failed. However, conservation of biodiversity and the use of local natural resources do not naturally coincide, even if local populations participate. Quite some conflicts in managing protected areas made headlines such as the National Park Kahuzi-Biega in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Lobeke National Park in South-East Cameroon.
During the seminar key questions discussed are:
- What are typical conflicts between biodiversity conservation, economic
activities and the interests of local communities? - How to align conservation with development objectives? What if use compromises protection?
- What are the key challenges of managing protected areas in SSA and how to approach solutions?
