Training course on disaster risk management completed

From October 9th – 18th, participants immersed themselves into the SLE TRAINING course Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management into Planning Processes (DRM). The exceptional experience and knowledge of trainer Martin Becher was essential in facilitating a quality training course covering elements of DRM such as risk assessment, risk mapping with GIS and various means of disaster prevention, mitigation and resilience:

Guest speaker Dr. Fabian Löw allowed this year’s participants again to conduct a training on Geographic Information System (GIS). In another session, Dr. Thorsten Klose from the German Foreign Federal Office gave insights about functioning of German international humanitarian assistance and forecast-based financing. Thomas Loster of Munich Re Foundation highlighted the role of insurance mechanisms in nature-related disasters, and strengthening resilience and sustainable disaster prevention through ownership as a central factor of success, as well as disaster prevention and resilience. The participants also had the opportunity to visit the German Red Cross (GRC) Logistics Center Schönefeld.

The 8 days intensive training course enabled participants to learn about the social, economic and political context of risk management programs and how to link such programs to climate change adaptation and development, different options of fostering resilience among vulnerable communities related to natural disasters and climate change and tools to identify essential livelihood resources (participatory climate assessment tools). It was an enriching, productive and effective training.

We would like to thank all the participants and especially the trainer Martin Becher and co-facilitator Magdalena Hörst!
