SLE TRAINING: Disaster Risk Management (DRM)

From September 10th - 21st, participants from over 10 different countries immersed themselves into the SLE TRAINING: Disaster Risk Management (DRM).  The exceptional experience and knowledge of trainer Peter Rottach was essential in facilitating a quality training course covering elements of DRM such as risk assessment, risk mapping with GIS and various means of disaster prevention, mitigation and resilience.

The participants also had the opportunity to visit The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research - PIK, the International Potsdam Summer School, as well as the German Red Cross (GRC) Logistics Center Schönefeld.  Dr. Abror Gafurov of The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences presented on hydrological forecasting.  Further Guest Speakers who joined the training included Fabian Loew who conducted a Graphic Information System (GIS) Training, Thomas Loster of Munich Re Foundation (MCII) who highlighted the role of insurance companies in natural disasters and strengthening resilience and sustainable disaster prevention through ownership as a central factor of success.

The two week intensive training course enabled participants to learn about the social, economic and political context of risk management programs and how to link such programs to climate change adaptation and development, different options of fostering resilience among vulnerable communities related to natural disasters and climate change and tools to identify essential livelihood resources (participatory climate assessment tools)  It was an enriching, productive and effective training.

We would like to thank all the participants and especially the trainer: Peter Rottach and training assistant Helen Engelhardt!
