Research cooperation with Training Centres in Mali

Since 2016, the SLE has done advisory research with regard training centres for agricultural and horticultural professions in Mali in the rice, mango and potato value chains. The focus is on innovations developed by the Green Innovation Centre. The cooperation partner is the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the associated Mali Green Innovation Centre, which is linked to the PASSIP irrigation programme: http://www.passip.org/.

From a technical point of view, we are committed to agro-ecological principles; from a methodological point of view, we pursue a practice-oriented, innovative and inclusive didactic approach; we are driven by the vision of a sustainable social-ecological transformation.

Phase 1 (01.09.2016 – 30.07.2019): duration 3 years

Together with five training centres (CFC Katibougou de l'IPR IFRA - Université à Koulikoro, CFAP Kayes, CEFE Niono, CFASPAM Mopti, CCFAP de Sikasso/Zamblara), we explore training approaches for agricultural professionals in the five regions of Kayes, Koulikoro, Sikasso, Ségou and Mopti on various topics such as small-scale irrigation, organic fertilisation and pest control. Our research topics were (1) capacity development, (2) development of professional training and the topic of (3) quality management.

Results: As a result, practice-oriented field-tested research results are available with regard to the following topics:

Phase 2 (ongoing, 01.08.2019 - 31-07.2022): duration 3 years

Based on experiences collected from phase 1, we have expanded the circle of our partners in the field of advisory research from five to twelve: four state training centres (Centres d'Apprentissage Agricole - CAA), six private centres (CFASPAM, CEFE, CCFAP, CFAP, CPM, CIFAN) and two universities, the CFC from the Université IPR-IFRA in Katibougou and the FAMA (Faculté d'Agronomie et de Médecine Animale) from the Université de Ségou.

In order to consolidate the impacts of phase 1, numerous research questions have been added in the field of management and organisational consulting, and we work in the following three areas: renewable energies, agroecology and mechanisation. In terms of methodology, we were able to develop new formats together with our partners, including explanatory videos, hybrid training concepts and the valorisation of teaching plots for an application-oriented and, if necessary, experimentally oriented training exercises. Another new element in the current phase is the South-South exchange of our partners with partners from Senegal.

Our axes of intervention are:

  1. Consolidation of the successes of the first phase
  2. Institutionalisation of innovation in the curricula of the new education and training centres
  3. Development and consolidation of networks of trainers and experts in agricultural innovation networking
  4. Development and conception of a platform for networking the partner institutions.
