A dynamic first week of the SLE Climate Change Adaptation Training

On August 5th, our SLE TRAINING Climate Change Adaptation Practice and Policy began. The two-week training, with 13 participants from diverse countries, is being led by experienced trainers Martin Rokitzki and Till Sterzel, with the aim of deepening skills and knowledge on managing, coordinating and designing effective adaptation initiatives in the policy and practice sphere.

Guest speakers have provided valuable additional insights. Participants had the opportunity to hear from Dr. habil. Fritz A. Reusswig of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Dr. Jan Volkholz- also from Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). In the second week of this training, guest speakers will include Andreas Vetter, of KomPass – Competence Centre Climate Impacts and Adaptation, German Environment Agency (UBA), Dr. Silke Stöber from the Centre for Rural Development (SLE) and Dr. Sarah D’haen of Climate Analytics.

Two excursions have taken place so far. First, to the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) where participants were given a presentation by Dr. Luís Costa on estimating investments in knowledge and planning activities for adaptation in developing countries. Trainer Till Scherzel gave a memorable tour of Telegrafenberg. We also went to BUND (Friends of the Earth Germany) to meet with Dr. Ing. Heinz Klimeczek - Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection who presented a very interesting and intriguing study on Environmental Justice in Berlin. Additionally, Herbert Lohner, Nature Conservation and Biodiversity specialist - BUND spoke on climate communication. Our third excursion will take place during this second week. We will travel to the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Fishery to learn about how to put science to practice, urban agriculture and aquaponics, with a presentation by Dr. Hendrik Monsees.

We have had a full and productive first week and look forward to an eventful second week. Many thanks to all the participants and especially the trainers Martin Rokitzki, Till Sterzel and assistant trainer Marina Flevotomas for the beneficial training!
